How to choose a rupay & upi credit card
RuPay credit cards can be linked to UPI apps (PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM) for tap-to-pay at any QR scanner — turning your daily grocer, chaiwallah, and rickshaw payments into earn-rate transactions. They're the closest India has to "credit card on every payment" since most kirana stores don't accept Visa/Mastercard but do accept UPI.
What to look for
Base UPI reward rate. Kiwi RuPay offers 1.5% base on UPI scan-and-pay. Tata Neu Plus gives 0.25-1% depending on whether you use the Tata Neu UPI ID. ICICI Coral RuPay is just 0.5%. Verify the rate ON UPI specifically — many cards have a different (lower) rate for UPI than other spends.
Monthly UPI cap. Tata Neu Plus caps UPI rewards at 500 NeuCoins/month. Kiwi at 1% of credit limit. These caps bite for people who genuinely spend most of their card volume on UPI.
Reward currency liquidity. Direct statement credit (Kiwi) is the most flexible. NeuCoins (Tata) redeem only in Tata's ecosystem and now expire 12 months after the credit cycle. ICICI Reward Points are fungible but at ₹0.25/point are low-value.
Ecosystem lock-in. Tata Neu Infinity's 10% NeuCoins on Tata brands (BigBasket, 1mg, Croma) is great if you already shop there. If you don't, the rewards are stranded value.
Who should get one
Get a RuPay & UPI card if QR-code payments dominate your monthly card volume — groceries from local stores, food vendors, rickshaws. Kiwi (lifetime free) is the simplest start; Tata Neu Plus suits Tata-ecosystem users.
Skip if your spending skews online (Amazon, food delivery apps) where Visa/Mastercard work fine and offer higher rates. UPI cards typically lose to dedicated online-spend cards on volume-heavy e-commerce.
